What are our nation’s children learning about Patriotism in America?

HEADLINE: Colorado students protest history curriculum changes that would promote patriotism. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/09/24/hundreds-colorado-students-protest-proposed-history-curriculum-changes/ At the heart of the issue is the Jefferson County school board proposal to focus history education on topics that promote citizenship, patriotism and respect for authority. It bears mention that this is an elected school board, with a majority in favor of the new proposal. The story showcases kids reaction to a teacher ‘sick out’, apparently rapidly broadcast by social media, and seemingly fueled by kids that fear they will lose their right to civil protest and be denied truth about America’s historic miss-steps. First, let’s listen to the kid’s perspective: “I don’t think my education should be censored. We should be able to know what happened in our past,” said Tori L., a 17-year-old senior student who protested at Ralston Valley High School in Arvada. Another student demonstrator, Tyrone P., a senior at Arvada High School, said Tuesday that the nation’s foundation was built on civil protests, “and everything that we’ve done is what allowed us to be at this point today. And if you take that from us, you take away everything that America was built off of.” And the response by Superintendent Dan McMinimee to the kids: Superintendent Dan McMinimee has met with some of the students and renewed his offer to continue discussions on the issue. “I respect the right of our students to express their opinions in a peaceful manner,” he said. “I do, however, prefer that our students stay in class.” The National Foundation of Patriotism wonders what kind of educators refuse to support a program that teaches citizenship, patriotism, and respect for authority? Especially in this day of an alarming growth in homegrown terrorism and a growing influence against American freedom. Further, why in the world are teachers allowed to create such a misguided hullabaloo that incites our nation’s youth to fear something that lacks truth and substantiation? It bears further mention that the Jefferson County school district is preparing for a renegotiation of union contracts. At issue here, is to distinguish the best teachers from the ones who do not excel in their jobs. This, most polls verify, is a topic that American parents overwhelmingly support. It’s to put the focus on qualifying the teacher’s performance, not the students! As these facts have surfaced, it gives us pause to think very carefully about what children in America really are learning all day, 5 days a week. Parents beware of the facts, before you allow your children to be exploited and frightened by people who clearly have an agenda to protect themselves and their jobs at the expense of our nation’s youth. America is filled with great teachers, and educators who conscientiously do their jobs, and shepherd our children in responsible ways every day. Let’s shine the light of truth on the current headlines, and let the truth set us free from being deceived. In conclusion, please join us in thanking those many, many wonderful teachers, and educators who are doing a great job EVERYDAY. Let us stand with them for truth, justice and the American way to continue to be taught by qualified teachers in America! This is a superb blog post. I think children need to have mandatory classes on state history with an emphasis on patriotism. Thanks so much for writing this!
